Or How to make the Best the Enemy of the Good
We take issue with the 11-28-06 and 11-27-06
Financial Times articles about Ecuador, calling for corrections, even as we recall numerous other adventures in similar articles regarding other nations, such as Bolivia and numerous failed nations that their already weakened Congresses will be able to fend off/hold back newly minted plans by their `elected' dictators to grab total power. These cut and paste boiler plate tales for enabling dictatorial power grabs from the shallow media goes like this: enjoy the wins by the Left and tamp down any concerns by warning Washington to never look at all at the internal machinery that is killing liberty plus engage in active, albeit misleading, propaganda (sometimes called journalism) to tell us that we must not worry because these newly minted power grabs will be stopped by their own Congressional forces for democracy.
Case in point are these two articles warning Washington to stay out of any fact based analysis regarding Ecuador's sudden shuttering of democracy.
Of course to turn a blind eye on Ecuador means that the media, the universities, the region and freedom lovers all over the globe must also turn a blind eye and enable the upcoming planned isolationism and retreat plans for Ecuador. Such an invitation to deceit is a party attended only by those already at the table, rejoicing the end of Lady Liberty in South America.
Washington, and any and all freedom lovers, are warned to Stay Away from Ecuador [Keep Your Hands Off] at the very moment when every tool in democracy's quiver must be utilized: transparency, free speech and open media, frank and factual analysis of the upcoming financial and governmental structural shifts, and the closing of Ecuador's trade and employment ranks. To stay away from Ecuador's crisis today is to participate in enabling the end of democracy by any definition.
The second lie spread wholesomely about Ecuador is that their Congress holds true capacity to fend off Rafael Correa's planned take over of absolute power under the Bolivarian Plan he announced as soon as the Exit Poll data was in. The media is not the only source of this canard. It is a myth spread widely by those who have failed to perform due diligence regarding Ecuador’s crisis. The voters of Ecuador are responsible for their own failure to seek educated positions even as their media and government functions at the lowest levels, mimicking foreign policy leaders in general. But false information is underway and it is not helpful at all. By giving false comfort to the public, already lazy and gullible in many instances, that the Ecuadorian Congress is not under Correa's sway and will fend off Correa, keeping his dictatorial take-over in check, is to ignore the facts.
Correa did not need to run a slate of Congressionally-aligned Congressional members in Ecuador because he has already full control over 1/2 of their Congress. The conceit of this unicameral congressional control is that the fix is already in....and has been for several months.
For those not yet convinced that Rafael Correa already controls the dark underbelly of Ecuador's Congress, who will swear him in this January and promptly permit Correa, by his plan, to remove the one thing they are required by their Constitution....legislate...we note that the so called anti Correa political party head, former president Rodrigo Borja will celebrate Castro in Havana even as Rafael Correa has long stated his solidarity with communism and himself vowed to stand united for communism's glory under Castro. Borja's ID party slate in Ecuador's Congress no doubt will rejoice in communism's glory just as their titular head Borja will do. The ID party is a hefty chunk of Ecuador's political numbers. Add to this the Pachakutik gaggle of anarchists and card carrying communists, the gaggle of already-working-for-Chavez- Abdala Bucaram's Roldosistas (still managed from Panama where he lives like a pasha on Chavez's payroll), and the routinely photographed members of their Congress seen in their local newspapers receiving brown paper bags of cash. Across this spectrum is a large stake holding Congressional team headed by former President Gutierrez- already pledge to march in lock step with the Chavez plan for Correa's power grab.
A quick count if this new "Congress" reveals more than 50% are already either fully aligned with communism's glory or already on the Chavez payroll or worse....unwilling to stand up for any ethical behavior at all. This then is not a maginot Line to fend off the surreptitious take over of democracy by Rafael Correa.
Unlike the international media and our foreign policy friends, Ecuadorians instinctively know the foolishness of these wide eyed claims that their Congress stands for anything at all or will fight to defend freedoms, already too small under state union controls to be recognizable.
To this already in-the-pocket-of Correa and Chavez Congressional morass, is the already prepared court system of Ecuador. As president of Ecuador, Lucio Gutierrez clumsily marched his court out at gunpoint and permitted the "civil" activists to install a replica of the Chavez court packing plan of activist judicial players who already know whose side of the bread they are buttered; the NGO actors who installed them. Rafael Correa's Inaugural Gift is his ready made Kangaroo Court whose willingness to ignore their role as defender of their laws and constitution and their incapacity to do anything but rubber stamp the mandate of their paid "NGO" masters is already well known.
Rafael Correa has this week announced his intentions to strip Ecuador's Congress of their capacity to legislate and hand that power to himself and his real inner circle, his "NGO" actors who do now commandeer their courts. This is a nifty two step dictatorial power grab, made certifiable by the add-in of the "NGO" actors already full of scorn for functional democracy, already chock full of demands that rule of law is not needed and fully enjoined in the anti-Plan Colombia love fest for the narcoterrorist FARC underway in Ecuador. Correa's inner group sincerely believes that law and order must first be to their liking. In short, Correa's power grab plan for the totalitarian rule by this new age caudillo is already greased by a bought and sold Congress and a Kangaroo Court is practically a done deal.
To misinform the public that Ecuador's Congress and their courts will defend liberty is a crude and misleading propaganda effort to enable the very anti-democratic Bolivarian sweep, whatever that means today. Lady Liberty will not be rescued in Ecuador by an ethically compromised Congress and a Kangaroo court.
Of this, there can be no Ecuadorian face washing any longer and no appeasing of the facts by the media and operatives of foreign policy. To continue is to further mire that land in the dirt and the muck...hardly a clean face.
Democracy dies when we turn a blind eye and fail to perform fact based analysis.
If democracy's promise is also defined as "good," what do we make of those who celebrate its death?
If Correa has "triumphed" in Ecuador, he has triumphed in duping his voters that he is a moderate when he clearly is Far to the Left of Evo Morales and outstrips even Chavez and Kirchner as mentors and trainers when it comes to organized, ritual power grabbing. If Correa's triumph means, as it does, that democracy must be shuttered and we all rejoice the end of integrity as we know it today, then each agent of propaganda and every citizen must consider carefully their next steps. Those who choose to make the best the enemy of the good will rejoice this day in Quito.
In fact, these mavens of goofy or failed morality are reprehensibly on a plane to Havana now to celebrate the true face of evil in Fidel Castro, Rafael Correa's adored leader, as he tells us celebrants of communism and its offspring: today's self enriching caudillos of daffy social re engineering and failed states will represent their full and deeply flawed sips of state, as if prideful of their failures to assist any but themselves and their inner circle as their decidedly non democratic ships of state go down. Celebrating Castro's clever reign of evil in Havana this week and next will be scores of amoral if not some truly sincere fans of fascism celebrating their leadership choice to Make the Best the Enemy of the Good.
